Bloomberg stated that Alphabet Inc.’s Google may lay off some trust and safety team workers and urge others to remain on standby due to Gemini concerns. These layoffs will affect “fewer than 10 people out of a team of about 250,” it said.
To reduce malicious actors from manipulating AI products, the team sets guidelines. The team also evaluates risk to guarantee the products are secure for Google’s global users, the article said.
Google stated that it requested certain staff to work during the Gemini row to prevent tool mishaps. According to the investigation, a Google senior emailed trust and safety personnel, “We need multiple volunteers on standby per time block so we can activate rapid adversarial testing on high priority topics.”
Another Bloomberg source said the team has had “an overwhelming workload as the company deals with the fallout of Gemini generating ahistorical images of people.”
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said workers were “working around the clock” to fix consumers’ issues with Gemini’s answers.
Google’s long-planned employment layoffs are part of its slimming efforts. A Google spokeswoman said, “We’re responsibly investing in our company’s biggest priorities and the significant opportunities ahead.” The company has been rearranging staff across teams since mid-January. According to the article, analysts Ben Thompson and Mark Shmulik recommended removing Google CEO Sundar Pichai. Ben Thompson stated prior flaws must be addressed, while Mark Shmulik claimed Sundar Pichai may not be able to lead Google.
Ben Thompson said Google required a “transformation” that “mean removing those who let the former run amok, up to and including CEO Sundar Pichai.”
Mark Shmulik in a letter said, “The most recent saga only further raises increasingly louder questions around whether this is the right management team to guide Google into this next era.”
Google’s Gemini was criticized by some users for creating historically incorrect photos and being “too woke”, “racist” and misrepresenting “white people”.
Google replied to criticisms by saying, “While we do this, we’re going to pause the image generation of people and will re-release an improved version soon” and Sundar Pichai stated the firm “got it wrong” and is exploring a solution.
