New rules on work permits for international students in Canada from 2024
In a significant move, Immigration Minister Marc Miller is gearing up to introduce a two-year limit on international student admissions. During a press conference in Ottawa on Monday, Miller highlighted that this initiative aims to address what he views as an exploitative system, particularly in terms of high international student tuition leading to subpar education.
This restriction will result in a 35% overall reduction in new study visas this year, with specific provinces, notably Ontario, facing even more substantial cuts exceeding 50%.
Miller underscored that, starting September 1, students in institutions with a private-public model will be prohibited from obtaining postgraduate work permits.
Additionally, in the upcoming weeks, open work permits will exclusively be available to spouses of students enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs, as well as professional programs like medicine and law.
The minister emphasized the federal government’s commitment to collaboration with provinces, acknowledging that progress in rectifying the perceived issues may not have been as swift as desired.
In the midst of discussions on immigration to Canada, the housing crisis has taken center stage. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre recently addressed this, stating, “It’s very simple math. If you have more families coming than you have housing for them, it’s going to inflate housing prices.”
He hinted at the possibility of capping the number of immigrants if the Conservatives were to be elected, aligning immigration growth with the capacity of housing, healthcare resources, and available jobs.
These measures could have significant implications, potentially affecting housing markets and the broader economy. It remains to be seen how these policies will unfold and impact the financial landscape in the coming years.
